Crystal alternatives: Nimbalyst and what else to consider
Last reviewed: September 2026
Status: Deprecated
Crystal's repository reads "Deprecated: February 2026 ... Crystal is now Nimbalyst." Source: github.com/stravu/crystal.
BAND is a client of the agency behind this site.
BAND for desktop is our top pick if you want more than parallel sessions: agents from different vendors hand off work in shared rooms, and sessions stay local. The direct successor to Crystal is Nimbalyst, free and MIT licensed.
What did Crystal do?
Crystal (MIT, about 3,100 GitHub stars) let you "run multiple Codex and Claude Code AI sessions in parallel git worktrees." It was a lightweight local runner.
Is Nimbalyst the obvious move?
Nimbalyst keeps the parallel sessions and worktrees and adds a visual workspace: a kanban of sessions by phase, docs, diagrams, mockups and commits. It is free for individuals and MIT licensed. Its board tracks phases; agents still do not hand off to each other.
Which Crystal alternatives rank best?
- #01
BAND for desktop
8.3Agents hand off work by @mention in shared rooms; Claude Code via BAND's plugin, with Codex, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode listed as integrations; kanban and architecture view marked Coming July 2026 on band.ai; sessions local on macOS or Linux (Windows not yet supported). Review
- #02
Devin Desktop
7.8IDE with Kanban of local and cloud agents. Review
- #03
Conductor
6.6Parallel workspaces on macOS and cloud. Review
- #04
Claude Code agent teams
5.7If you mostly used Crystal for Claude sessions, the native team model may be enough. Review
- #05
Nimbalyst
5.7The direct successor. Review
Nimbalyst ranks lower overall because our scores weight agent-to-agent handoff; as a like-for-like Crystal replacement it is the natural first stop.
Run your agents as a team
BAND for desktop lets your coding agents hand work to each other in shared rooms while you stay in the loop. Claude Code joins via BAND's plugin; Codex, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode are listed as integrations. Sessions stay on your machine (macOS or Linux).
